Safety Attitude Screening©: screen your employees' attitudes toward safety

Safety Attitude Screening© (SAS) is an online tool that can help to evaluate safety attitudes and predict safety behaviour in the workplace. You can identify your current and future employees' risk profile. SAS has been validated in conjunction with ArcelorMittal Corporate Health and Safety and Ghent University.


How does Safety Attitude Screening© work?

Safety Attitude Screening comprises three complementary tests with direct and indirect measurements. It monitors social desirability and internal consistency scales have been added to prevent scores from being manipulated.

  • The direct measurement is a questionnaire in which the respondent must indicate whether the statements apply to him/her. This measures safety behaviour, focus or control, convictions, assertiveness, pressure felt, risk tolerance and overconfidence.
  • The trade-off test gives the candidate the choice between four equally socially desirable alternatives. This measures efficiency, safety, social relationships and performance.
  • The implicit test on thrill-seeking-preferences looks at the participants' reaction times. This measures a preference for relaxing (less risky) or exciting (risky) activities.

Once the candidate has completed the three tests, the employer receives an individual report. This includes

  • the respondent's risk-profile: the likelihood of high-risk behaviour at work in comparison to those in the reference group.
  • the specific results of the three tests, also in comparison to the reference group.

SAS is available online in ten different languages (English, Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish and Czech). It takes approximately half an hour to complete.


How can SAS be used?

This online tool is most commonly used when recruiting new employees. SAS saves your organisation time and money by quickly identifying candidates with the right attitudes to safety. This doubles the chance of selecting the right employee with the right safety attitudes: a low-risk profile significantly reduces the likelihood of unsafe behaviour.
You can also use SAS to screen your existing employees and to identify their risk factors. SAS can then function as a tool to raise employee awareness regarding safe behaviour at work. Coaching or training can follow the screening.
