What are cookies and what are they used for?

A cookie is an amount of data that a website sends, via the server on which it is hosted, to the visitor's browser for the purpose of storing this data on the visitor's computer. The content of such a cookie may be short (e.g. 'NL' for a cookie that remembers your choice of language) or rather long (e.g. IP addresses, contents of a shopping basket, etc.).

Sometimes a cookie is placed and read by a party other than the operator of the website (known as third party cookies). The most common of these are cookies are used for statistical data, such as Google Analytics cookies.

At subsequent visits to this website, the server will be able to recognise the user's browser and access the information previously stored on the visitor's computer. The information that is saved and stored on the visitor's computer in the form of a cookie, is determined entirely by the operator of the website visited by the user.

Cookies are used primarily for such purposes as, for example:

  • remembering your login name or settings (e.g. choice of language);
  • collecting web surfing data (field entries, pages visited, etc.);
  • maintaining site statistics (number of visitors, etc.);
  • linking a browser to temporary variables on the server (session cookie);
  • etc.

Certain cookies are only used for technical purposes (e.g. a session cookie, which is used to store the contents of a shopping basket when surfing on an e-commerce website), whereas other cookies contain content-related information (e.g. choice of language, fields on forms, contents of a shopping basket, etc.).

In brief, cookies not only make surfing possible, they also enhance and facilitate the user's surfing experience.
